Thanks to Jas for suggesting this idea of having an additional, harder assignment each month (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f8/master-class-assignment-10991-2.html). As always, we'll try it and if it works we will keep it.

This month's idea also comes from Jas.
90 degree lighting (sidelight) to create texture Photo converted to B&W. No use of HDR as shadows are an integral part of this assignment.

Thx Jas!

Okay then, who will post first?

This month I WILL do both assignments...but I'm slow.

No takers on this one yet? Come on - give it a try :D

Cool stuff! The lighting makes the lettering stand out and shows texture on your background surface.

Thanks, JAS. Yours is pretty cool too. Like the paper wrinkles and the DOF choice on this one with the repetition. Nice! :)

will this qualify? this is an old shot. i think i shot this last year.

Iggy - Good on ya for going first! It totally fits the theme.
Jas - Like the comp on yours and good texture revealed throughout the shot
ED - your shot mostly works except it's not BW. There's no hard and fast rule, but most of us try to use fresh shots for assignments. All that said, wonderful texture on the eggs!

Here's the converted BW version of the shot I posted in the other assignment. IMO it qualifies for both as I caught the sun at 90 degrees:

One barefaced speedlite from the right. Hope this is ok, as I added a bit of texture in post-production....

Lol, awesome! Are you the potential victim or the killer here, Richard?

Everyone is showing great texture here!

Dreamer, I am wondering if your photo might benefit from a bit of a contrast boost and sharpening? nice job showing the veins in the flower petals though.

Thanks JAS, I was the victim crouched at the top of the stairs in this one.(my wife gave up her shadow for couple of shots.)

Dreamer - this is a decent attempt, but it's a harder subject to get texture from. We see some texture here, but not loads. Flattish objects will be easier.
Ed - no need at all to apologize, and your second shot works as well!
Casil - Works for me, interesting subject and comp.
Richard - very cool scene, nice and moody, like the story. The texture (as is defined in the assignment's title) should be a result of side lighting though, not PP.... and it should be a key element of the shot. Still early in the month though. :)
Greg - Really nice texture and BW here!

Noted... I'll try and find some time to try something else out. Thanks for the feedback. :)

Sorry it's been a while - life got very busy. Here is my first attempt at 90 degree lighting, post was done in Lr 3. Shot this using one speedlight through one of my umbrellas with only half of the black backing material uncovered. Camera settings: 1/60 at f5.6 85mm triggered speedlite wirelessly at 1/8 power. Used Matt's Classic Split Tone BW preset

Nice one EdG!

Here's mine and I feel it needs a back story so here goes. I have a very strong practical joke side to me and a friend of mine has very sensitive skin on her hands and fingers. Her skin is so sensitive that it gets raw when doing simple tasks like flipping through a newspaper. So she often wears finger cots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_cot) AKA finger condoms. They are normally boring beige in colour. A few months ago I was surfing on a gadget site and I saw bright pink finger cots. I thought it would be a hilarious joke-gift for my friend. But when they arrived, even though they are meant for fingers, they are obviously meant for other play with fingers...because they were ribbed. Ok then here's my shot. :D

OMG that's hilarious! perhaps they were meant for smurfs?

what's even more interesting is that you kept them..... :D

Wow. I haven't posted here in a while but this topic caught my attention (on Facebook.) Here's one I did a while ago that I thought was pretty cool. The model is a friend of mine and I had just bought a flash remote so I could take the flash off the camera.

Thx Richard!

Jason (jmayoff) - I quite like that classic sidelighting portrait! Since you haven't been here in a while (good to see you!), maybe you feel like trying a fresh shot for the assignment. That's what most of us try to do, shoot fresh stuff for the assignments. There's no hard and fast rule though and we appreciate your contribution!

Richard - I like your take on this one, interesting angle as well.

The month is still young, members should feel free to post multiple shots to this assignment if the feel the inspiration. :)

I don't know that the phrase 'wee bit' should be used in the same thread as condoms jokes.....

Some really cool shots here folks!:thumbup:

While checking emails this morning I happened to look down to see the light from our family room window streaming on to my desk and side lighting my glasses - picked up my point and shoot, posted in Lr 3 and here it is:

Here is my first attempt for this assignment...It is based on a wooden sculpture and window light. I have used a black layer( underexposed image) to mask the frame of the sculpture. Please let me know if that is acceptable for this assignment...

I thought I would give it a go here, despite my level of proficeincy on the subject.

I tried to include different types of textures hoping they would show up nicely. Unfotunately, it is rainy season around here and the light is so diffused at any time of the day. :wall-an:

But as assignment should be done on time, I will submit this as a first try. ;)

Please give me your C&C in which ever theard I post.

Thanks
