At the jazz club last Saturday I wanted to test the limits of my D5000. So I shot this portrait @ f3.2, @ 1/40sec and using ISO 6400. Used my Sigma 150mm f.28 for the shot. Main reason was to find out the amount of grain I would end up with. Converted the RAW file in Photoshop, and did a bit of grain manipulation ... so what is the verdict?

Not bad for 6400! You can see the graininess mostly in the Oof areas, but her face and hair and scarf look pretty good, Matt!

I think it did quite well! I'm betting you could remove more grain with a NR program but I like it as is. I bet it would look good as a B&W.

I agree - VERY nice for 6400!

OMG I am so jealous. I get more grain that that at ISO 200, I do see it on her arm though, prob not a good place for grain, but I'm still quite jealous! And although my work monitor is not calibrated, I think she looks a bit purple? Still though, considering the distance/ISO and everything that you were testing... did I mention I was jealous?

Methinks the arm is out of focus more so than grainy, and yes, you are right, it is a bit on the blue side .. time to invest in a calibrator
And thanks to all for your comments. I will try one @ 3200 and see if it improves any ....

That photo really is very useable at 6400! It's a nice shot in general as well.
I much prefer the colour version here.
