okay I know I post tons of pictures of my dogs and I would say :sorry: but I would be lying. They are part of my life so often end up in my shots. :) This time I took this deliberately and I quite liked it.

As in all photography, the subject of the image is only one aspect. Foreground and/or background are there to compliment the image. IMHO your angle on the shot could have been a bit more from the top, thus positioning the head of the dog totally against the grass background. You would eliminate the bright spot on the left side of the dogs eye, which distracts from the dogs face. Other than that it is a great shot, sharp and well executed.

thanks Matt. the problem with moving up is then I am shooting down and that detracts as well. However, I took a stab at making the background less distracting. Any better?

Yup, I think so. Depends really on how much of an angle you have. This shot is pretty well taken at eye level, so it appears. Moving up a little, to maybe have a 10-15 degree angle would not have hurt a lot, I think. Then again, it would make the head appear to be bigger than it is ...
