I am no bird photographer but these two were cute. They came up on the boat launch on the Bow River while I was there. Humans had left traces of food which they snacked on. :( This mama duck only has the one baby.

I have a feeling that the floods we had in June caused a few birds to lose their babies and hence some late clutches. I was thinking the same as you, HBGirl. August is almost over and the baby will probably not be ready to fly south. Many of our ducks and geese over-winter but that is a long haul too, and they are predicting early cold weather for us.
Seeing a mother with only one baby just doesn't seem right, I've seen up to a dozen. Here's to hoping it all ends well for the little one.
